Invitations to Join In 4: Swap Shop
March 2009
A series of events at the Encounters shop where visitors came and swapped items, shared their histories and took away something new. The event included a variety of interpretations of the theme and included the swapping of items, ideas, experiences, stories and information.
As well as an ongoing ‘drop in’ swapping of books, songs, everyday objects and curiosities, skills, vouchers, tips and advice, visitors were invited to take part in specific activities, workshops and off-site events and lead by a variety of local artists, residents, groups and organisations.
The schedule included a women’s story, clothes and lunch exchange; international song swapping; pinhole camera, knitting, crochet and other skills workshops; a clothes swap disco; and a story and book swapping social. View the flyer for these events

Invitations to Join in 3 : Love Shop
February 2009
A place to talk about, reminisce and proclaim feelings of love! What or who do you love? It could be another person, a place or a thing? What do you love about yourself? What do you like doing best? Stories, poetry, tea and sympathy - visitors were invited to tell us a story about love, have their photo taken in the diary booth and the local radio played samples of visitors 'our song'.

Invitations to Join in 2: One Word
November-December 2008
Invitations to Join in 2: One Word was an interactive window display that began on 24th November 2008 and continued everyday as it got dark, until Christmas Day. We invited people, whether local or from further afield, to visit the shop and submit one word that they wanted to see projected onto the Encounters shop window after dark.
Suggestions were written on acetate strips available outside the shop, and posted though the letterbox. Every day, one word was selected at random and appeared in the window that evening.

Invitations to Join in 1 : Encounter Abundance
October-November 2008
Abundance was a project to harvest the seasonal glut of local fruit such as apples, pears, plums and more, collected from all corners of Sheffield. These were offered in the Encounters shop FREE in exchange for stories, ideas or participants own fruit.
Visitors came and swapped a favourite recipe for a new one; offered a fair exchange for a jar of finest local jam or chutney; swapped seeds; found out about the new Sheffield Green Food Map and about ‘growing your own’.
